Erasmus+ Grant for Internship & Thesis with a Non-EU Destination

Important: The Erasmus+ grant for an internship/thesis at a non-EU destination is only available for projects with an end date before August 1, 2025, with the exception of Switzerland and the United Kingdom (see below for more information).

Wageningen University offers a non-EU Erasmus+ grant to WU students who are going to do an internship or thesis abroad in one of the following countries:

  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom

Please note that only one Erasmus+ non-EU grant per student during each study cycle (BSc or MSc) will be awarded. It is possible, however, to receive both EU and non-EU grants during each study cycle.

NB Fewer Opportunities Top-Ups are not available for the countries mentioned above.

General requirements

Check this list to see if you can apply for the Erasmus+ grant

  • You have to be registered as a student at Wageningen University during your internship or thesis abroad.
  • The internship or thesis should be acknowledged as an official part of your WU study programme.
  • The internship or thesis needs to be confirmed by signing an internship or thesis agreement with your WU supervisor and the receiving institution.
  • You will need to work full time (35-40 hours per week) on your internship/thesis.
  • The minimum duration for your stay abroad is 2 months (60 days, travel days are not included).
  • You can apply for the Erasmus+ grant multiple times within one study cycle (BSc or MSc, for study exchange and for your internship/thesis abroad), up to a maximum duration of 12 months (360 days). However, you can apply for a non-EU grant only once per study cycle.
  • Your destination country cannot be your home country (first or second nationality applies).
  • During your internship or thesis, you will live in the country where the internship or thesis research takes place.
  • Internships or thesis research at an EU institution and other bodies related to the EU are excluded. This applies to the EU institutions as mentioned in the list on the EU website.
  • Funds will be allocated first to students who have not yet received an Erasmus+ grant in the past, and on a first come, first served basis.
  • Students who receive financial support from the receiving organisation might receive a lower grant or have a lower priority in receiving a grant. The grant applications will be individually assessed.
  • You will not use the Erasmus+ grant for expenses that are already covered by another scholarship from the EU.
  • You will not apply for other EU scholarships during your stay abroad.
  • The allocation of grants is subject to the availability of funds.

Note that there are no Erasmus+ grants available for activities that are not part of a WU BSc or MSc programme, such as internships after graduation and voluntary internships.

Erasmus+ grant amount for the United Kingdom and Switzerland

  • Due to budget restrictions for countries outside the Erasmus+ programme countries, the total grant amount for the United Kingdom and Switzerland is limited to a maximum of 2 months (EUR 1080 in total), plus travel support. This applies to new applications (submitted after July 3rd), with a start date after September 1st, 2025. It is important to keep in mind that the remaining days of your stay abroad are being registered as non-funded days and do count towards the maximum of 12 months of Erasmus+ grant that students are allowed to receive per study cycle (BSc/MSc).
  • The grant will be paid in two times: 70% of the total amount (if you send all the required documents on time) at the start of your stay abroad and 30% once you have returned to the Netherlands (after you have submitted the required upon return documents).
