Jos Steller - Biorefinery and Conversion
After following the Bachelor Biotechnology at Wageningen University & Research, I almost automatically continued with the Master Biotechnology. However, I was drawn to the Master Biobased Sciences because I have a very broad interest and liked the prospect of looking at the whole value chain of the biobased economy.
I feel like the academic pressure is really manageable, and I like the way that lectures are given and how staff and students interact.
Could you please tell us about your educational background?
“I expected to be taught about the different aspects of a biobased economy, and I feel like that expectation has been matched very well by the program. There are two mandatory courses for everyone: “Circular Economy” and “Principles of Biobased Sciences”. I figured out soon that I don’t like the economy and social parts as much, but I feel like it is very useful to have the knowledge. In this way I will be able to understand the other players in the chain and can form the link between different disciplines. Within the program, there are people with many different backgrounds, which helps to gain new perspectives when working together. The interdisciplinarity in both the courses as well as the people in the program really makes me feel prepared to work in the field of Biobased Sciences.
I am currently finishing my thesis, where I’m looking at a catalyst in the conversion process of biomass. The goal is to “upgrade” biomass to the same level of currently used, non-renewable fuels. The research is part of the transition to a biobased economy, which feels like I’m actually contributing to a change in the world. After my thesis, I have to finish some courses and then I will be looking for an internship. I’m hoping to do an internship in the field of bioconversion, something different than the green chemistry that I’m working on now.”
What do you like about Wageningen?
“I’ve been studying in Wageningen for 5 years now and I really enjoy it. I feel like the academic pressure is really manageable, and I like the way that lectures are given and how staff and students interact. I have a vibrant social life with friends, housemates, the study association CODON and the volleyball association WaHo. “
What do you advice future students?
“For anyone who considers studying the Master Biobased Sciences, I would recommend to really sit down and think about what your goal is. If you want to specialise in one direction, maybe a different Master would be better. However, if you want to learn about the whole value chain of biobased economy and gain an interdisciplinary perspective, the Master Biobased Sciences is great!”
