Student testimonial

Student experience: Alejandro Sánchez – MSc Bioinformatics

Alex is from Spain and came to Wageningen to study Bioinformatics after finishing his bachelor’s in Biotechnology. He chose to come to Wageningen because he loved the way Wageningen acts as a bridge between nature and science. In his free time, he likes to read about science, climb, and play chess. Currently, he will be going into his second year of his master’s program.

I chose Wagenigen because I loved the way Wageningen acts as a bridge between nature and science.

Study choice

“I looked at two more MSc programs, one at Utrecht and one in Amsterdam, but those programs were more focused on computer science. My main goal is not to focus on computer science aspects of bioinformatics but to focus on combining the tools from both bioinformatics and biotechnology to apply them effectively together. I feel that the MSc program in Wageningen focuses more on applying the bioinformatics tools and that's why I came here.”

Program

“Together with my study advisor, I chose the courses that had the most relevance to me for my goals, which led me to specialize in systems biology. One of the aspects I wanted to explore was machine learning and I could choose courses around that. I have also decided to first perform my internship as opposed to first performing the thesis as usual, as I want to take part in the iGEM team as part of my master thesis.”

Student life

“I love it, I couldn’t be more happy with my student life. I am used to Madrid which is a large city and I wanted to be in a smaller city closer to nature, like Wageningen. I also really love the biking lifestyle in the Netherlands.”
