Master's Data Science for Health Promotion
Data are everywhere. From sensors and trackers, to apps. Data about demographics and behaviour of people. All these data can help us to better understand healthy and unhealthy lifestyles. Which healthy or unhealthy choices do people make? Our new Specialisation Data Science for Health Promotion teaches you to transform a broad range of relevant data sources into understandable and actionable knowledge, relevant for informed decision making. You will be equipped with not only the methods of data science but also key theories for making sense of all that data.

About Data Science for Health promotion
The specialisation Data Science for Health Promotion aims at combining health promotion with the domain of data science. This also includes data acquisition from diverse data sources, handling various types of data, techniques for data cleaning, analyzing, visualising the results, and translating the results into usable knowledge in an ethical sound way. Students will be educated as domain specialists with a good knowledge of how to use data science technology and contribute to health promotion.
You become an expert on Data Science by:

- Explaining and comparing a broad range of relevant data sources in the field of health science.
- Applying data science techniques to a data set in the health domain given a problem.
- Identifying challenges and opportunities that come with using Big data for health research.
Study programme
In the first year you combine compulsory courses, like Data Science for Health: Principles, with restricted courses such as Theory-Driven Data Analysis for Population Health and Settings for Health Promotion. The second year is for your thesis and an internship. And what about Solving Societal Health Challenges with Data science? In this course you participate in a team to advise an actual company or organisation on a problem in the health domain. You bring together academic insights and practical knowledge and come up with an advice on future actions for that company.

For this specialisation we work closely with the Masters Nutrition & Health and Management, Economics & Consumer Studies. You will take joint courses and specialisation specific courses.
