Internship.
Hello, my name is Janneke Schwaner. I will share my stories from my internship in Fresno with you. If you want to know more about my adventures, you can follow the WURldexplorers on Instagram; search for the #wurldexplorers hashtag!
First week
My first week in Fresno was mainly: working my ass off at the lab. I needed to fix all the paperwork to ensure myself of entrance to all the buildings (even for students in the evening and during the weekends here ;) ). In addition, I started trying analyses in MATLAB with the data that was already there. By this way, I can learn how I can shoot the new movies of the carnivorous plants (with a higher camera speed). In a later post, I will tell more stories about the project, but I was unable to make pictures within the lab (and possibly, I am not allowed to make them over there anyway).
Save the carnivores
I am already 3 weeks in Fresno and want to give a small update. The most of the time I worked (again) in the lab, but I also did some nice other stuff.
Vintage days
This weekend an event called 'Vintage Days' took place at the university's campus. Time to hang out and enjoy the lovely weather! (I was sunburned immediately).
San Francisco
Saturday the 25th of April we vitisted San Francisco. A long time since I've been there (jan 2009 for the last time), but most things are still the same. We started at pier 39, walked to China Town and to the coit tower. After that we picked up the car and drove to Twin Peaks and Golden Gate Park (I really had to see the Dutch Tullip Garden).
Filming tiny bladders
Long time ago since I updated you. Well, things are going well. I just work hard to get my data done in time and I write my thesis in the weekends. So, less time for trips and sightseeing. However, coming weekend there is a large conference in San Fransisco organized by AAAS (that publishes Science Magazine) and I got in with a poster presentation! All the hard work will pay off finally.
AAASPD conference San Francisco
Last days I attented the AAASPD yearly conference at San Francisco. My abstract was accepted a couple of weeks ago and after a lot of work, my poster was finally ready to go. Maybe it is not a nice piece of art, but for a first poster my main goal was to get the story clear. Especially because the conference included people of all kind of specialisations, I needed to include a background story and a more detailed part about fluid mechanics to frame my story for people that are not familiar with the processes and physics laws.
Moving time!
It's again a long time ago that I updated you. I am so sorry! But I moved a month ago to the house on the picture (the house below) and since then I am only working on my report to finish it in time.
The adventurous travels - part I
As soon as my holidays started and my boyfriend had arrived, we took of to go to one of the most famous national parks in California. Yosemite. I obtained a permit for a multiple day hike (trailheads: Big Oak Flat Road - Yosemite Falls), so we had to put our backpacks on and hit the trails.
The adventurous travels - part II
After spotting Yosemite from majestic heights, we went to the depths of Kings Canyon (we really know now where the name comes from ;) ). For this park I obtained a permit for a 5 day hike, the famous Rae Lakes Loop. I know you can do it in less days (crazy people we met did it in one day, running), but we took our time to enjoy this amazing park.
