Visiting scientist fellowship

The visiting scientist fellowships are meant to give staff members the chance to invite external researchers to spend a few months at a WIAS chair group. This grant covers living expenses up to €1000 per month and travel costs to and from Wageningen and will be administered via the chair group of the staff member.

Conditions: 

  • Financial support for a stay of up to 6 months in 2024
  • Budget meant to cover the costs of travel to Wageningen (including visa) and living expenses
  • Not meant for extending stay of WIAS PhD candidates
  • The visiting scientist should contribute to the research of the hosting chair group
  • The visiting scientist should actively contribute to WIAS (e.g. giving PhD course, seminars, lecture, etc.)
  • Within 4 weeks after the visit, a short evaluation (1/2 A4) is sent to WIAS

Selection is based upon: 

  • Quality of the scientist
  • Envisaged contribution to WIAS and the scientific community of Wageningen University
  • Expectations on establishing international networks or long-term work relations

PhD travel fellowship

This grant allows PhD candidates to visit a research institute/university abroad to perform research. This grant covers expenses related to housing and travel (from and to Wageningen) up to €1000 per month (maximum €3500). The fellowship will be administered via the chair group of the PhD candidate.

Conditions:

  • Financial support for a stay of up to 4 months to perform research at a research institute or university abroad in 2024
  • Budget meant to cover the costs of travel from and to Wageningen and housing
  • Approved WIAS research proposal and TSP
  • Clear added value to the research project of the PhD candidate (the visit should be an extra activity that is initiated by the PhD candidate, not an integral part of the original project as described in the project proposal)
  • Written confirmation of host institute before reimbursement
  • Within 4 weeks after the visit, a short evaluation (1/2 A4) should be sent to WIAS
  • PhD candidates can only receive this fellowship once

Postdoc grant proposal writing fellowship

Deadline: closed

The postdoc writing fellowship gives postdocs the opportunity to spend 3 months on writing a grant proposal that primarily contributes to the scientific career of the candidate (such as NWO-Veni proposal).

The grant consists of 3 months of salary with payment of overhead.

Conditions:

  • The activity should take place in 2024
  • PhD graduation less than six years ago
  • Approval of the chair holder
  • Mention the funding source and application deadline
  • The fellowship is not to be used as an extension of a PhD project
  • Postdocs can only receive this fellowship once
  • Grant budget is transferred to the chair group after proposal submission
  • A copy of the completed grant proposal is sent to WIAS
  • The grant proposal must be submitted to a suitable organisation (such as NWO) and WIAS should be informed about the outcome of the selection procedure (approved or not).

Selection is based upon:

  • Quality of the candidate
  • Quality of the proposal

WIAS graduate programme

The WIAS Graduate Programme involves the funding of a PhD position and aims to stimulate talented MSc students of WU to obtain their PhD through research at one of the WIAS chair groups on a subject of their choice.

The call for the WIAS graduate programme is open to all MSc students from Wageningen University who graduate in _____. The proposals must be written by the candidate with feedback from the anticipated supervisors of the project. All applications need to be accompanied by a letter of support from the main supervisor(s) of the project and must be submitted to Nicole Rodenburg (nicole.rodenburg@WUR.nl). 

The grant covers the 4-year salary costs of the candidate. Research costs are to be covered by the chair group that is hosting the PhD candidate.  

Conditions for application

  • The daily supervisor/promotor is a WIAS member
  • Each WIAS promotor can only be part of maximum one application.
  • The candidate has obtained or will obtain his/her WU MSc degree in ____
  • The proposal should be in line with the WIAS mission

Selection of the candidates

A selection committee, composed of WIAS scientific staff, WIAS Board members and/or members of the WIAS International Advisory Board, will assess the submissions based on: 

  • Quality of the candidate (40%)
    • Motivation of the candidate
    • CV of the candidate
    • Interview
  • Scientific quality and originality (30%)
  • Scientific and/or societal impact of the proposed research (30%)

From the applications a maximum of six candidates will be invited to present themselves and their research in an interactive session with the selection committee. In the presentation the candidate is asked to elaborate on the research project and their motivation. The selection committee will base its final judgement on the proposal, review reports, presentation and the interview.
