The Dutch sandy soil landscape is going through crisis. Farmers in Eastern Netherlands saw drought for three years followed by torrential rains that caused flooding of their fields. The NWO project CASTOR (Catchment Strategies Towards Resilience) researches together with provinces and water boards to investigate how you can make sandy landscapes more resilient to consequences of extreme weather. The Netherlands has implemented policies to maintain its land and water systems, which are vital for food production, biodiversity, and other important functions. However, fragmentation of management actions has limited the ability to adapt to climate change and maintain these ecological and societal values. Sandy soil regions in the south and east of the Netherlands are particularly vulnerable due to the high interconnectivity of land and water use. The research project this post-doc is part of aims to develop knowledge for regional adaptation planners on future landscape visions and pathways to achieve them, using a long-term, complex adaptive systems perspective.
We are seeking a Postdoc to develop pathways to climate-resilient land and water use landscapes for the sandy soil regions of the Netherlands. The climate-resilient pathways will include both short-term actions and long-term options as well as the monitoring and evaluation needed for decision-making and institutional learning. In addition, you will be responsible for transferring knowledge from the CASTOR project to policy and practice. You will therefore also facilitate the Community of Practice (CoP) and other stakeholder interactions, and deliver communication and training products. Your main tasks will be:
- Facilitate and organize a CoP on climate-resilient development pathway development in sandy soil regions
- Study how actors envision climate-resilient development pathways and strengthen their capacity to adaptively implement these pathways
- Develop communication and training products for a larger audience.
- Organization of workshops for the CASTOR research team and participants in the livings labs to ensure integration of findings and step-by-step development of pathways
- Synthesize pathways to navigate climate-resilient future for the Dutch sandy soil landscapes
You should be motivated to work in a transdisciplinary research team and have a willingness to interact and collaborate with a diverse range of partners. You are expected to communicate your results to scientific peers, project partners and the general public.
Requirements for the position are:
- You should hold a PhD in Environmental Sciences, Geography, Climate Studies, Water Management, Planning, Social Sciences or related field
- Experience or willingness to work within a transdisciplinary setting with different types of stakeholders (including different types of scientists)
- You are a systems thinker and have experience with analysing complex social-ecological or similar systems
- You are a strong team player
- You are self-motivated, curiosity-driven and open to communicate and collaborate with others in a multi-disciplinary team and with a range of societal stakeholders
- Excellent communication skills and proficiency in both English and Dutch.
