Scientific Writing for Professionals
As a researcher, you will regularly write scientific texts. In English too. This can be a bit of a challenge. How do you create a text that is clear and expresses exactly what you want your reader to know? From a clear message to a sleek structure, this training course guides you step by step towards a rock-solid scientific text.
The course is taught entirely online using the Virtual Classroom in Brightspace.
Target group
Scientific writing for professionals is for researchers who want to improve their scientific texts.
Course content
During this training course, the focus is on professionalising and optimising your English scientific texts. The training is practical and goal-oriented. You will work with your own text. Accordingly, it is important that you are currently writing an article or another longer scientific text when you start this training course. The teacher will give you feedback to help you edit and optimise your text.

The following topics may be covered:
- purpose and message;
- paragraph structure, argumentation and flow;
- reader-centred writing;
- techniques to enhance readability;
- your scientific writing style and how to vary it;
- correct and clear wording;
- use of sources (quoting and paraphrasing);
- grammar and vocabulary.
The participants are expected to work on additional (writing) assignments from the literature, study material independently and complete assignments.
Intake
During a free intake interview and with an Oxford Online Placement Test, we will map out your starting level, learning objectives and wishes.
Certification
At the end of the course, you will receive a certificate from Wageningen in’to Languages.
If you are taking the course as part of Wageningen University & Research Language Guideline, your skills will be assessed throughout the course. Assessment is based on the writing assignments you submit each session. If you sufficiently improve in the course, you will receive a Wageningen in’to Languages certificate.
