New round of the NWO Open Science Fund

The Fund aims to support projects specifically designed to implement and stimulate Open Science practices. For this second call of 2023, a total of € 1.5 million is available, with a maximum of € 50,000 per project (up to a one-year duration). The submission deadline is 26 September.

Focus of the Fund

Priority is given to projects that:

  • improve how well open science practice is recognised and rewarded;
  • transform the way researchers publish;
  • develop or adapt interoperability standards;
  • develop, test or adapt open platforms or tools for wider community use;
  • stimulate wider adoption of open science practice among researchers;
  • further the adoption of citizen science approaches.

The submission deadline is 26 September. A total of €1.5 million is available and a maximum of €50,000 can be applied for per project (up to a one-year duration). Visit the NWO website for more information.

Evaluation criteria

Applicants will review each other’s proposals. NWO has used this working method successfully for several years. It's a method which benefits researchers by enabling them to learn from each other’s ideas. Open Science methodology, including Research Data Management and software sustainability, will be part of the evaluation.

Success rate of last call

In the previous call (1st half of 2023), WUR had a fairly good success rate: we were involved in 5 out of 30 projects.

  • Open Hardware Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (OHEPR) Dr. V. Saggiomo (Wageningen University & Research)

  • Moisture Tracking for Climate Models: a Community Effort Dr. ir. R.J. van der Ent (Delft University of Technology, in cooperation with WUR and University Utrecht).
