In 2021, 92% of the peer-reviewed articles by WUR corresponding authors was published Open Access. Compared to 55% in 2017, this is a huge increase over the last few years. You can find more Open Access statistics in the infographic over 2021.

Taverne Amendment

The high Open Access percentage is partially due to the implementation of the “Taverne Amendment". The amendment allows researchers to open their closed peer-reviewed publications in Research@WUR six months after the first (online) publication. WUR researchers may do this regardless of the publisher’s policy.

WUR Library started to implement the Taverne Amendment in early 2021. The Open Access team began by offering to open up peer-reviewed articles published from 2020 onwards and publications that were published before 2020 only ‘on demand’. In fall 2021 this was extended to book chapters and conference proceedings. As a WUR researcher you can use the Taverne participation form to open up your publications. Please check beforehand if you fulfill the requirements. Many WUR researchers use the Taverne tool. In 2021 more than 500 articles, and 75 book chapters plus conference proceedings were opened with the Taverne amendment.

Trend in Open Access publishing

The percentages on Open Access publishing at WUR are based on the most recent data (retrieved on 25 January 2022) from our Research Information System. Open Access percentages increase over time, because 'closed' articles can be opened after an embargo period. The trend in Open Access publishing is shown in the infographic below. Here you can also see if Open Access publishing is suitable for you and how WUR Library's Open Access team can support you.
