Nutrition for Growth: the NIGI project in Uganda

The Nutrition for Growth (N4G) summit takes place in Tokyo this week, during which scientists, policy makers, and NGOs meet to discuss ways to tackle global food shortages and malnutrition.

The summit comes halfway through the UN Decade of Action on Nutrition. This decade was announced five years ago as ‘the decade to focus on tackling food shortages and adapting food systems’, leaving only five years to meet the World Health Assembly (WHA) targets and ten years to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) is working on this theme worldwide. Nutrition and income generation (NIGI) is of crucial importance when people are forced to move in large groups. These so called host communities put enormous pressure on local resources, jobs and markets. WUR, together with partners, started the NIGI project in the West Nile region (Uganda), where many refugees live on a monotonous diet with little or no access to fresh fruits or vegetables.
