Wageningen World: ‘We can avoid millions of tons of emissions’
Planting forests, improving the efficiency of farming and getting the chemical industry to go biobased are all effective, affordable strategies for addressing climate change, say eight Wageningen researchers. They should be enshrined in a long-term government vision. ‘A vision that can stand up to short-term political thinking.’
Gert-Jan Nabuurs, professor of European Forests at Wageningen Environmental Research, worked on a study that demonstrates that planting new forests can significantly boost CO2 storage. He says planting new forests is effective and affordable, and it helps towards several other goals at the same time like the increase of biodiversity and the creation of jobs.
