Louise O. Fresco vice-chair of scientific committee UN Food Systems Summit

The United Nations published the composition of the scientific Group for the Food Systems Summit on 29 June. Prof Louise O. Fresco has been invited to act as co-chair of the scientific group.

In 2021, UN Secretary-General António Guterres will convene a Food Systems Summit to raise global awareness and land global commitments and actions that transform food systems to resolve not only hunger, but to reduce diet-related disease and heal the planet. The Food Systems Summit must offer a turning point in our efforts to deliver the 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals.

Scientific evidence

The Scientific Group is responsible for ensuring the Summit brings to bear the foremost scientific evidence and helps expand the base of shared knowledge about experiences, approaches, and tools for driving sustainable food systems that will inform the future. The scientific group will play an important role in the clarification of the level of ambition and commitments that will emerge from the Summit.

The Scientific groups consists of 29 leading experts in food systems, chaired by Prof Joachim von Braun from the German Center for Development Research (ZEF). Prof. Louise O. Fresco was invited based on her extended work on worldwide sustainable food production.
