Researchers from Wageningen University & Research have developed a heat protocol for pig farmers. The core of the protocol is that pig farmers, together with their employees, advisers and veterinarian, take timely measures, measure effects and evaluate what could be improved.
The summer of 2019 had an extremely hot period in the Netherlands. Pig farmers have done their utmost to limit the consequences for their animals as much as possible. This resulted in many lessons and creative solutions.
Commissioned by the public private partnershop Climate in pigsties, Wageningen Livestock Research has developed a five-step approach. Together with a list of measures to prevent heat stress, this forms the heat protocol. The protocol allows pig farmers to determine the best measures for their specific farm together with their employees, advisors and veterinarians. The most important tip: be well prepared for heat; do not act until it is already warm in the stable.
