Wageningen UR Library signed a contract for an institutional membership of Public Library of Science (PLoS) PLoS is an organization that like BioMed Central does publishes journals under the Open Access model. This model means that the publishers' digital journals are freely available on the Internet; there are no paid subscriptions. The production costs of the journals are partly covered by publication fees, paid by authors. Publishing an article in a PLoS journal costs $1500. As a result of the institutional membership, Wageningen UR authors get a discount of 20%. When publishing in PLoS journals becomes a success, a higher level of membership with higher discounts (up to 75%) become within reach.
Wageningen UR was already member of BioMed Central. The Library pays an institutional fee that also covers the Wageningen UR author’s publication fees.
