2 PhD vacancies Next Generation Governance

We are looking for candidates for two PhD vacancies within the project 'Next generation governance arrangements for sustainable global value chains':

1. At Public Administration and Policy Group (PAP):

Promoting public private synergies

Private governance initiatives are considered more effective than state-led initiatives in addressing environmental and social problems in GVCs. However, these private initiatives are increasingly criticised for their limitations in addressing land conflicts and smallholder concerns, their bias towards a single-commodity approach and their lack of area-based governance. Furthermore, public authorities in both producing/exporting and importing countries increasingly develop public governance initiatives. This project examines the potential for developing synergies between public and private governance. The research is carried out in Wageningen, and should lead to a PhD dissertation.

2. At Forest and Nature Conservation Policy Group (FNP):

Understanding transparency and traceability

Transparency and traceability have become pervasive features in global environmental governance as well as in GVCs. However, their delivery in practice is predicated on careful consideration of what exactly needs to be made transparent and traceable, what knowledge and expertise is needed, and what actors need to be involved. This project investigates current transparency and traceability infrastructures operating on multiple scales in global value changes and assesses the potential of next generation arrangements to find new and innovative solutions to transparency and traceability problems and concerns.
