FreshEd with Will Brehm is a weekly podcast that takes ideas in educational research, which may initially seem impenetrable, and seeks to make them more accessible, unraveling their complexity through conversations with expert academics in the field.

FreshEd tries to make research on globalization and education less esoteric by encouraging academics to talk about concepts in their work in a conversational atmosphere using everyday language; and to expand the reach of educational research and ideas to a larger audience, beyond the confines of academic journals and conferences. The show has been widely received, reaching an audience around the world. It has also been incorporated into many university syllabi.

Will Brehm interviewed ELS’ Arjen Wals at the 2018 Global Education Meeting, which was a high-level forum held in Brussels in early December that reviewed the progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals. One of the questions was:  What’s the connection between education and climate change? In the conversation, Arjen details a few examples of school-level practices that could be seen as working towards a sustainable future while also critiques educational competition and the hidden curriculum of consumerism and commodification. In the end Arjen calls for more dissonance in education systems as a way to learn new forms of sustainability to combat climate change.
