The worries about the negative side-effects of intensive animal husbandry in the Netherlands are not recent. Nevertheless not much is changing. At the moment the Netherlands is trying to define its policies regarding climate change mitigation. This might also be a good moment to rethink the animal husbandry systems in the Netherlands as they contribute significantly to CO2 output of the Dutch economy. We need to change the addiction of the consumers in the Western world to cheap food, and not the least to cheap meat, eggs and dairy products. Only then can we create sustainable food systems. The Dutch newspaper Volkskrant published an opinion piece on this, co-authored by Paul Struik and signed by 28 professors.
