Bird flu detected at a poultry farm in Hiaure
Bird flu (H5 virus) has been detected at a poultry farm with laying hens in the small Dutch village of Hiaure (Dongeradeel Municipality in the province of Friesland). To prevent the spread of the virus, a total of approximately 28,500 laying hens will be culled from the poultry farm. The cull will be carried out by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA). There are no other farms in the area within a one-kilometre radius of the poultry farm in Hiaure that will be required to undergo preventative culling.
One other poultry farm is located within a three-kilometre radius of the affected farm in Hiaure. Samples will be collected from this poultry farm for bird flu testing. Mr Van Dam, the Dutch Minister for Agriculture, immediately announced a ban on transporting poultry within a ten-kilometre radius of the farm in Hiaure. The transportation bans applies to poultry, eggs, poultry manure and used litter. All existing national measures will remain in full force.
Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) will perform virus-typing to identify the strain of H5 bird flu virus.
