On Wednesday March 4 the third online seminar of the Haifa Group about advanced fertilization was broadcasted. Professor Leo Marcelis, Head of the chair group Horticulture and Product Physiology of Wageningen University, showed the participants how they to deal with deficiency or toxicity of micronutrients.

When plants suffer from deficiency or toxicity of micronutrients, growers have to study first the pH in the soil or substrate and then the use of the right chelates. That’s the conclusion of the third webinar of Haifa Group about advanced fertilization.

Micronutrients play a major role in the metabolism of plants. Deficiency or toxicity lead to growth reduction, discoloration and changed shape of the plant. The availability of micronutrients to the roots of plants is extremely depending on the pH in the soil or substrate, says Prof. Leo Marcelis of Wageningen University during the third Haifa-U webinar.

When plants suffer from deficiency or toxicity of micronutrients, growers have to study first the pH. Most of the micronutrients are best available at a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. Growers can improve the availability of micronutrients by using chelates. However, the stability of the chelates is also pH dependent and differs per microelement. Therefore, a proper fertilization is a mix of the pH, the use of the right chelates and of course the concentration of the micronutrients.

This webinar about optimizing color and appearance of plants was the thrid webinar in a series of four.
