ENP is proud to welcome our new associate professor Jeroen van der Heijden
Dr Jeroen van der Heijden is an Associate Professor of Comparative Urban Climate Governance and holds a joint position at the Environmental Policy Group (Wageningen University) and the School of Regulation and Global Governance (Australian National University).
Jeroen works at the intersections of regulation and governance, policy change, and urban development and transformation. His research aims to improve local, national and international outcomes of urban governance on some of the most pressing challenges of our time: climate change, energy and water use, and a growing and increasingly urbanising world population. Through his work, he seeks to inform ongoing academic debates on these challenges, as well as to provide hands-on lessons to policy makers and practitioners.
Some of the key questions that drive Jeroen’s research are: How can we achieve urban sustainability and resilience without the traditional force of law? Why are free markets often unable to achieve a meaningful improvement of the environmental performance of cities and buildings? Whether is collaboration between governments, businesses and civil society a fruitful approach for urban mitigation and adaptation processes?
Jeroen received his PhD in Public Administration (highest honours) in 2009, and his MSc in Architecture (high distinction) in 2002, both from the Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. Jeroen worked in private consulting from 2003 until 2005. From 2009 to 2011, he worked as an Assistant Professor at Delft University of Technology, and he held a positions as Visiting Fellow and Visiting Associate at the University of Oxford (Department of Politics and International Relations), the London School of Economics (LSE Cities), the University of East Anglia (Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research), and the University of Washington (Department of Political Science). In 2011, Jeroen was awarded a highly competitive Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research VENI grant to study governance for urban sustainability and resilience in Australia, India, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore and the United States in the period 2012-2015. In 2014, he was awarded a prestigious Australian Research Council DECRA grant to continue his work on governance for urban sustainability and resilience in Australia, China, India and the United States in the period 2015-2018. In 2016, he was awarded another highly competitive research grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, a VIDI grant, to continue his work in Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America, and expand it to Africa and South America also. This for the period 2017-2021.
Jeroen travels frequently to collect data on innovations in governance for urban sustainability and resilience. He is happy to discuss possibilities for collaboration or sharing the data he has collected in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America.
