There are significant health inequalities in the Netherlands. On average, people in vulnerable positions live 18 years less in good health than people from better social and financial circumstances. This has to change.

We have yet to narrow this health gap in the Netherlands. One reason for this is that we aren’t setting the right priorities. For example, developing community weight loss programmes that focus on exercise and movement is a great idea, but do the people these programmes serve even have the money to buy running shoes? Is their neighbourhood suitable for programmes like these? Are the invitations being read?

Many of these initiatives were developed by well-intentioned scientists based on scientific evidence. ‘A healthy future for everyone’ is based on something else: experience.

Wageningen University & Research plans to work with people who know what it’s like to live with less, who have struggled to find work or a stable living situation, or who have suffered from mental health issues.

As part of the advisory board, volunteers can share their ideas and contribute to promising solutions that help people get healthier. Their experiences may even raise new issues that are worth looking into.

Would you like to share your experiences and contribute to solutions? If so, we’d love to hear from you. We are still looking for new board members to help us create a healthy future for everyone. We start on 1 June!
