Farmers took to the streets in several cities in the Netherlands on Wednesday, 7 July, to protest the government nitrogen policy. They also protested on Wageningen Campus. Managing Directors from Wageningen University & Research engaged into conversations with the farmers.

These are times of great difficulty and uncertainty for farmers. Recently, various perspectives on the future of farming and how this affects the Netherlands have been put forward in the media. The Netherlands does, indeed, face significant choices. The solutions must be found through interaction with the farmers rather than going over their heads. To this end, WUR conducts field research in collaboration with the agricultural sector.

WUR’s contribution focuses on integrated scientific options and practically applicable solutions. The challenges in agriculture must be addressed as a whole rather than in part. It is up to the policymakers to make decisions.
