Gibbs Kuguru and Ecomare x-rays a deformed spotted ray
Fishermen caught the weird-looking spotted ray (Raja montagui) in the North Sea. Instead of the usual triangular shape, it had two points at either side of its head. Gibbs Kuguru, PhD student at MAE and ABG, is a shark and ray expert and together with Ecomare x-rayed the ray to get more information on the deformation. The x-ray shows it is not due to an injury, but an abnormal extension of the ray's wings. The cause is unknown, but Kuguru says it could be parasites, arthritis, tumors, or a genetic defect.
