Kick-off workshop for SUPERSEAS research project
30 June - 2 July ENP and WorldFish hosted a workshop for the SUPERSEAS project in Penang, Malaysia. Colleagues Simon Bush, Sawitree Chamsai and Mariska Bottema from ENP were present, together with Miranda Meuwissen and Ho Hong Lien from the Business Economics Group of Wageningen University. The workshop served as a kick-off meeting for the SUPERSEAS, short for ‘Supermarket supported area-based management and certification of aquaculture in Southeast Asia’, programme.
This NWO-funded programme aims to improve the design of area-based management for aquaculture production in order to reduce the social and environmental risks associated with smallholder aquaculture, and improve the terms under which smallholders are incorporated in domestic, regional and international retail-led value chains. The three PhD students in the SUPERSEAS programme spent the month of June in Vietnam, Thailand and Bangladesh for a scoping field visit. They met with different stakeholders in the three countries and visited potential sites for their research.
Their adventure ended with a kick-off meeting for the project in Penang, during which the PhDs, the project partners and additional representatives from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) had the opportunity to discuss the three research projects, and make concrete plans for the coming year.
