Four master’s students Water Technology* came up with an idea to produce eco-friendly building blocks from brine. During the Amsterdam International Water Week 2019, they received the first-place trophy of the Brains for Brine Challenge.

The challenge was to avoid discharge of brine as a residual product from desalination of red seawater. The idea fits well with the concept of a circular economy. The team received 10,000 US Dollars in price money and is now in the running for additional support through potential piloting of their idea in partnership with the Red Sea Development Company

*The master’s Water Technology is a joint degree programme from Wageningen University & Research, The University of Groningen and University of Twente University.
