The advancements made in the life sciences over the past decades gave rise to the bioeconomy.

Together with an increase in intra industry trade, product differentiation, and globalization this has resulted in agriculture production to become more vertically integrated. The advancement in the life sciences also provide new opportunities for agriculture to address the different dimensions of the global challenge for sustainable development changing the economics of agriculture and the impacts of and requirements for appropriate policies.
