An online sustainable tourism course produced by the Cultural Geography group is one of two finalists from Wageningen University which are among the 10 finalists in the 2019 edX Prize for Exceptional Contributions in Online Teaching and Learning.

The MOOC (massive open online course) is coordinated by lecturer dr. Arjaan Pellis. The jury has remarked: "Dealing with a topic interesting to all of us, Arjaan managed to create a community of practice in sustainable tourism, connecting various stakeholders around concrete problems. Being already an outstanding classroom teacher, Arjaan pushed our pedagogical approach and the limits of online learning by integrating scaffolding and open-ended learning in his MOOC. His strong online presence helps to inspire and connect with his learners."

The selection committee is made up of faculty, instructional designers, college deans, and online learning directors from edX partner institutions. The other MOOC finalist from Wageningen is team BeerX with 'The Science of Beer'. Other finalists include teams from Bombay, Dartmouth, MIT, Belgium and Hong Kong. They represent a diverse range of disciplines.

The edX University Advisory Board will evaluate the 10 finalists to select a winner, who will be announced at the 2019 Global Forum in Hong Kong. The winner will receive a $5000 award.
