THE Impact ranking: WUR scores high on climate and fighting hunger
Wageningen University & Research (WUR) ranks among the top 300 universities in the Times Higher Education Impact Ranking of 2021. This is the first time WUR participates in the ranking, in which over 1000 universities from across the globe are ranked according to their contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
There are a total of 17 Sustainable Development Goals published by the United Nations in 2015. The THE impact ranking takes the research output (volume and quality of publications) into account, as well as how the university, as an organisation, contributes to the sustainability goals. For the evaluation, each university receives a score based on four SDGs: the three in which the university scores highest and SDG 17 (concerning partnership). The impact ranking was launched three years ago.
Five SDGs
WUR takes part in the ranking with four of the seventeen United Nations sustainability goals: SDG2 Zero Hunger, SDG12 Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG13 Climate Action and SDG15 Life on land. Information was also provided for the compulsory SDG17 Partnerships.
The scores WUR achieved listed per individual SDG were:
- SDG 13 Climate Action, 25th
- SDG 2 Zero Hunger, 27th
- SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production, 101-200
- SDG 15 Life on land, 101-200
- SDG 17 Partnership for the goals, 301-400
High score
WUR scores extremely high (over 90 out of 100 points) for research in all SDGs. For agricultural education (SDG 2), low-carbon energy use (SDG 13), and collaboration with local food producers (SDG 2), WUR also did well.
