WASS Guide on supervising PhD candidates published

Wageningen School of Social Sciences (WASS) published a handbook on procedures, principles and good practices for supervising PhD candidates. In order to safeguard quality of research and in particular the supervision of junior researchers, the handbook elaborates tips and tricks from senior WASS fellows that supervise PhD candidates as well as the WASS office.

The handbook also contains eight basic principles for effective interaction between PhD candidates and their supervisors, developed by the WASS Committee on Scientific Integrity, together with the WASS community.  In the Guide, we not only outline these eight principles but also describe the Wageningen University PhD procedures in more or less chronological order, especially for new supervisors in our Graduate School. Most importantly, and especially for this Guide, many WASS supervisors and PhD candidates have shared their experiences on the do’s and don’ts of supervision with us.

The Guide is not intended as a substitute of the official regulations such as the Doctoral Conferral Regulations or the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Scientific Practice. Furthermore, this text shall be regarded as a dynamic document being subject to constant change according to the changing environment of Wageningen University.
