Dutch farmers and other land users are going to have to emit 3.5 million tons less CO2 per year as their contribution to reaching the country’s climate targets. Wageningen is studying the options. ‘Technically, a great deal is possible. A lot depends on what farmers can put into practice.’

Poultry farmer Johan Verbeek proudly displays the meadow where he has planted 200 walnut trees. The now still slender saplings fill part of the space over which 16,000 free-range chickens roam. ‘On hot summer days, the leaves will provide shade,’ says Verbeek.
