To give Open Access an extra boost, the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU) has started the national pilot 'You share, we take care'. Wageningen University is also participating in the pilot. In collaboration with researchers, the pilot makes articles available through 'Green Open Access' six months after their publication date.

Green Open Access

Dutch universities have made agreements with many publishers about Open Access publishing in subscription journals (Gold Hybrid Open Access). However, approximately half of all published articles is still behind paywalls.

That is why authors are facilitated in making their articles available to the public through university repositories (Green Open Access). The VSNU started with this pilot on 31 January 2019.

You can authorize us to make your publication Open Access in the repository Research@WUR. (formerly database Staff Publications). Using this option is a simple way to make your publication Open Access without extra costs. This procedure contributes to the Dutch ambition of 100% Open Access in 2020.

Taverne Amendment

Section 25fa of the Dutch Copyright Act, also known as the Taverne amendment, allows authors to make publications Open Access in university repositories. The amendment has been translated into several concrete principles, and will now be implemented at Dutch universities.

The amendment also affects Wageningen University's participation in the pilot 'You share, we take care'.

Pursuant to the Taverne Amendment, authors must meet a few conditions to participate in the pilot. The research on which their article is based, must have been funded partly or entirely with Dutch public funds, and the author or co-author must have a contract with a Dutch university. Furthermore, the publication must not exceed a certain length. During the pilot, authors who wish to share their work online will get additional support where necessary.
