Can you really communicate with your dog via communication buttons?

Our research assistant Jori Noordenbos was interviewed by Quest about the use of currently popular 'speaking buttons' with dogs. Some dogs are able to make associations between pressing a button and doing or receiving something. However, Jori argues this does not mean they understand the meaning of the word 'said' by the button.
