Our interdisciplinary way of working is WUR’s strength. It is how we arrive at comprehensive considerations, solutions and innovations. WUR acknowledges that research requires high-quality research infrastructure which continuously asks for significant investments. As such, a roadmap and procedure have been drawn up, coordinated by Shared Research Facilities, for giving direction to these investments in research infrastructure and embedding them within the Dutch and European scientific ecosystem.

It is clear that research infrastructure is increasingly becoming a digital research infrastructure. Collaboration and knowledge sharing have the potential to lead to new insights and scientific breakthroughs. Now that we have arrived in the digital era, performing interdisciplinary research requires an infrastructure that enables combining cross-domain data and knowledge sharing whilst making responsible use of frontier technologies. As such, it is of crucial strategic importance for WUR to look at the overlap and complementation of investment proposals with a digital component.

We observe that many science groups are successfully creating new digital research infrastructures of their own that may potentially benefit other science groups. In order to investigate the potential value of all these investments across our domains, we propose the development of a WUR architectural approach for both current and future investments, accordingly aiming to guarantee and offer guidance with regard to positioning digital investments within the ecosystem, to enable federation and FAIRness. The architectural approach is one of cocreation; shaping the a federated and FAIR digital infrastructure together. If you want to get involved, get in touch!
