How can area-based management bring sustainable food to your plate?
The SUPERSEAS research project was a project funded by NWO which aimed to improve the design of area-based management (ABM) for aquaculture.
Why area-based management?
Why improve the design of area-based management (ABM) for aquaculture? And first off, what is ABM? ABM is an approach that recognizes that farms are integrated in broader landscapes, hence social and environmental risks are managed across areas instead of the traditional individual farm-based approach.
Through years of research in South-East Asia, SUPERSEAS found that ABM has the potential not only to improve the terms under which smallholders are incorporated in seafood value chains but also, to improve the sustainability of food production more broadly.
