How to deal with GenAI at WUR?

I (Jene van der Heide) think the most discussed topic in data science is AI, or, more specifically, GenAI (Generative Artificial Intelligence). Just like I remember the introduction of the internet and mobile phone during my studies in Nijmegen, students now will certainly remember the introduction of ChatGPT during their studentship. Yes, I’m that old! Internet and the mobile phone, later the smart phone, were life changers. I expect the impact of generative AI (GenAI) on our lives to be even deeper and more significant. GenAI is hitting WUR at its core.

As such, several initiatives have started to think about dealing with GenAI at WUR. Maybe you have participated in the FAT session on AI (see last WDCC newsletter). Education (ESA) is well underway setting guidelines and is organising support for students, professors, examination boards, etc. Research is a bit behind. But it’s time to act as WUR as a whole. We need a coordinated approach on ‘how to deal with GenAI at WUR’ and, more broadly speaking, how to deal with GenAI in science.

Arthur Mol, Arnold Bregt and Wouter Hendriks have asked ESA - Jolanda Soeting and WDCC - me (Jene van der Heide) to coordinate WUR's response/approach to GenAI. For your information, we are in the phase of setting up this process of coordination. We will share our setup as soon as possible. To build a community around this major challenge, we will organise get-togethers, like we did on 10 July.

If you are involved in a GenAI workgroup at WUR, have clear thoughts on actions to be taken, connections with other universities or just want to lend your thoughts with regard to ‘how to deal with GenAI’, please contact Jolanda or me.
