Despite the issue of the world's degrading coral reefs, PhD candiddate, Joshua Wambugu has hope for the future. He presents this message for the 2023 Dies Natalis.

The social dimension of sustainable marine futures

Joshua Wambugu is a PhD candidate at the Environmental Policy and the Marine Animal Ecology group. In his research, he works on the topics of community-driven marine nature conservation and coral reef systems.

Joshua speaks about his work with coral reef restoration and investigating the social dimensions that surround such restoration projects. As the ocean continues to face threats, such as those of coral reef degredation, Joshua argues that inclusivity, social trust, and conservation interventions that are locally embedded give hope to sustainble marine futures.
