Nematodes vector bacteriophages in compost and soil
Soil phages (viruses of bacteria) must disperse through a challenging soil habitat before they reach their host.
Our study shows phages hitchhike along with free-living nematodes after attachment to the cuticle or ingestion. Phages can be associated with bacteria during transport, and can also be moved without bacterial hosts present. This
demonstrates a novel mechanism of phage dispersal in soil and compost.
