Did you know that 20% of the world population is infected with helminths (parasitic worms)? Secreted glycoproteins from these helminths form an untapped pool of vaccine candidates, but also potential therapeutics against autoimmune diseases. The glycans on these proteins play an important role, but due to their extraordinary structures they are sometimes difficult to reconstitute.

In this manuscript we have reviewed the current state of the art and current challenges in glycoengineering helminth glycoproteins. In addition, we share our vision on practical applications, production platform optimization and how the generated knowledge can assist other fields in science, ranging from parasitology and immunology to plant sciences.
