About 20 participants, presenters and organisers gathered to discuss the interactions between communities and industries in the Arctic.

This symposium was a follow up from the SEES expedition to Spitsbergen in 2015. During the symposium new social scientific research was presented on the relation between communities and the oil and gas industry in the Arctic, discussed the relevance of these insights for Dutch policy makers, companies, organisations and researchers, and strengthened the Dutch network of social science and humanities researchers working in the Arctic. Our speakers were Dr. Maria Tysiachniouk (WUR), Dr. Annette Scheepstra (Arctic Centre, University of Groningen) and Robert Blaauw (Independent consultant for the Arctic oil and gas industry, former officer of Royal Dutch Shell).
