Research innovation theme 4: Governing Environmental Mobilities
It's the things that move that matter! In our globalising world, environmental problems are increasingly driven and caused by the transnational movement of people, goods and resources. At the same time, environmental change is increasingly affecting the direction and volume of transnational mobility, such as in the case of conservation tourism, climate refugees or global shipping.
There is a dearth of knowledge on how to govern transnational mobility towards sustainability, particularly through transnational, informational and multi-actor governance arrangements.
The Governing Environmental Mobilities research programme of ENP provides this knowledge. Our researchers apply various innovative theoretical and methodological approaches in areas of the world where the transnational and dynamic character of mobility systems can be studied, such as in marine environments, the Polar Regions, and in climate vulnerable areas. By identifying promising governance arrangements for environmental transformation in transnational mobility ENP research contributes to the quality of life on this planet.
