On Friday the 9th of June we had the pleasure to welcome Prof. Mike Gibney from University College Dublin, Ireland, to present his perspectives on the current debate surrounding processed food and health.

In an engaging presentation, Prof. Gibney shared his critique of the NOVA scheme of ‘ultra-processed foods’ and challenges in using this to guide dietary advice. He further highlighted the importance of considering a foods environmental impact as well as its nutrient content when comparing dietary patterns. The seminar was followed by questions and discussions with staff and students. Prof. Gibney has previously written several articles on the topic of Processed food and health with members of the SSEB Chair group (see here and here). Afterwards, there was time to catch up with friends from the Division of Human Nutrition and Health (L – R, Prof. Fre Pepping, Prof. Ciarán Forde, Prof. Mike Gibney, Prof. Jo Hautvast, Prof Kees De Graaf).
