Three scientists from Wageningen University & Research (WUR) are to receive a Vidi-grant. The 800,000-euro fund allows them to develop their own research trajectory over the next five years. Establishing a research group is part thereof.

Vidi-grants are awarded to experienced researchers who have conducted successful research after obtaining their PhD. Together with the Veni and Vici grants, the Vidi funding is part of the NWO (Dutch Research Council) talent programme. Ingrid Boas, Nora Sutton and Raymond Staals are to develop new research trajectories for WUR.

Genetic tools from bacteria with a safety lock

The DNA altering De CRISPR-Cas technology has seen a spectacular development over the past few years. In this project, Raymond Staals intends to seek missing parts of the CRISPR-Cas system, which may be used as safe tools to develop new diagnostic and medical applications.

Protecting drinking water supplies

In the Netherlands, potable water comes from clean groundwater. However, the groundwater quality is under threat from micro-pollution such as pesticides and medicine residues. Nora Sutton’s research aims to use natural micro-organisms in groundwater to break down micro-pollutants. Thus, we can sustainably protect our drinking water supply.

Climate change and mobility in border regions

WUR researcher Ingrid Boas wants to know what the relationship is between climate change and international migration. In this project, an answer is sought by mapping the trans-border mobility of people from areas affected by climate change in four different examples. The examples show how historical, socioeconomic and political aspects have shaped this relationship.
