Assistant Professor Stephanie Hobbis of the Sociology of Development and Change Group has been awarded a Veni grant for her research project: “Data exploits: Uncovering pathways to digital autonomy for science and society”.

Digital technologies collect and process data through a top-down process that allows for exploitation. By studying how residents of remote environments with long histories of anticolonial resistance navigate digitization, this project uncovers possibilities for autonomy from digital exploitation and generates practice-based responses for more inclusive uses and management of data.

Together with Vidi and Vici, Veni is part of the NWO Talent Programme. Veni is aimed at excellent researchers who have recently obtained their doctorate. Researchers in the Talent Programme are free to submit their own subject for funding. NWO thus encourages curiosity-driven and innovative research.
