Professor/Chair Environmental Systems Analysis Group

Prof dr Carolien Kroeze is chair of the Environmental Systems Analysis Group and director of WIMEK (Wageningen Institute for Environment and Climate Research). She is also associate professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. She has been involved in integrated assessment studies, with special emphasis on large scale modelling of aquatic and terrestrial systems. Her research includes scenario analyses and evaluation of environmental policies aiming at simultaneous abatement of multiple environmental problems. Her field of study includes environmental systems analysis, with special focus on substance flow analysis and biogeochemistry, using multidisciplinary approaches and integrated assessment modeling. She co-developed environmental models, focused on understanding the relationship between human activity and coastal nutrient enrichment. Among these models are the Global NEWS (Nutrient Export from WaterSheds) model, and the MARINA (Model to Assess River Inputs of pollutants to seAs), that are global, spatially explicit models that can be used to simulate river export of pollutants as affected by human activities on land.
