Cor Wattel is a rural economist with more than 25 years of professional experience in Africa and Latin America. He has ample experience in supporting smallholder finance initiatives, as consultant, project leader and researcher. Through the angle of development finance, he has accumulated experience in agri-business and value-chain analysis, as well as a strong understanding of household socioeconomics. He has been active in a variety of crops and markets, including food grains, coffee, bananas, horticulture, sugar cane, dairy, export fruits. In a wider rural development perspective, he has worked on topics of cooperatives, land reform, climate-smart agriculture, as well as capacity building and social performance management.
His current (research) specialization at Wageningen Economic Research is on development finance and evaluations. Cor has strong language skills (English, Spanish, French) and is a capable communicator with a collaborative style.
