I am interested in the dynamics of soils and landscapes, and specialized in the development and application of luminescence dating methods to read the geological archive.

My research interests evolve around the notion that sediments and soils in the subsurface contain information on how the landscape changed over time due to natural processes and in response to human action. Geochronological tools are essential to read and interpret the information, and luminescence dating is a versatile tool that can be applied on timescales of decades to millions of years.

If we understand how landscapes change over time, we can use this information to develop sustainable and effective management strategies that use natural processes rather than fight against them.

I lead the Netherlands Centre for Luminescence dating. The luminescence dating facility is located on the Wageningen UR campus. For more information, see www.ncl-geochron.nl
