Researcher

Peter van Baarlen studies interactions between microbes and their plant, human and animal hosts. I have a Ph.D. in Evolutionary Genetics.

My work experience relates to the molecular and physiological basis of host susceptibility, tolerance and resistance to pathogens and commensal microbes. My research interests include population biology; co-evolution and interactions of pathogens and hosts; -omics and in silico pathway analysis; and discovery of novel gene and protein functions. At HMI, an important part of my research involves integration of laboratory and in silico data. My research aims are to identify human and animal pathways that are modulated in response to a dietary or microbial stimulus. I have a special interest in the interplay between microbiota, host transcriptomics and host metabolomics. My main research interests evolution of host-microbe interactions; microbial pathology; virulence of streptococci; human disease; genetic variation and stratification. I like to collaborate with groups in (medical) microbiology, nutrition, physiology and immunology. My colleagues work at universities, veterinary institutes and hospitals, and university medical centres.
