The Darwinian “survival of the fittest” highlights the importance of muscle function for health preservation. Silvie Timmers is a human muscle physiologist interested in preserving and promoting muscle quality and health and preventing functional decline in which she departs from a mitochondrial and metabolic perspective. Her research aim is to better understand the main factors which underpin changes in muscle quality. To fulfil this vision her research agenda focuses i) the development of sensitive and non-invasive muscle quality assessment tools, ii) increasing physiological and mechanistic knowledge on the different determinants of muscle quality, how they interrelate, and how they affect muscle function and health, iii) finding suitable lifestyle and pharmacological interventions to improve muscle quality. Ultimately, it is her research mission to preserve and optimize muscle quality in health and diseased states and thereby contribute to a better physical performance and quality of life.
