Circular fertiliser for greenhouse horticulture
Horticulture still makes use of mostly linear (mined and synthetic) fertilisers. In this project, WUR has formed a consortium with Evergreen Garden Care, Van der Knaap Groep, Covestro en Bioenergy Netherlands to dive into the transition from linear to circular fertiliser for the greenhouse sector. The consortium is focusing the research into both solid and liquid circular fertilsiers. The project is in part financed by Topsector Tuinbouw & Uitgangsmaterialen. For the solid fertilsiers, the project is investigating new biobased and biodegradable polymers and the best technology to create slow-releasing circular fertilisers. For the liquid fertilisers, the project is focused on the use of oxidative bioreactors to convert organic nutrients into mineral forms.
Tommaso is involved in several projects at WUR, and all of them merged to one final Reducing the emissions of the greenhouse horticulture sector and reach a complete circular greenhouse system. For such an intense objective, Tommaso is helping to developing technology and furthering the knowledge on greenhouse crop nutrition.
